The new system will replace the current Eurovignette mechanism and is part of a pan-European trend toward tariffs that take into account actual road use, emissions, and the sustainability of transport infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The new toll will apply to both domestic and foreign trucks traveling on most of the country\u2019s motorways, as well as on selected regional and municipal roads. The toll will be calculated based on the total mileage, vehicle category, weight, and environmental performance. To account for distance, carriers will be required to use a mandatory on-board unit (OBU), while units compatible with the European Electronic Toll System (EETS) are recommended for international shipments. Final tariffs have not yet been published, but market participants expect an increase in transportation costs, especially on long road routes.<\/p>\n<p>Ellerman City Liners notes that these changes may increase interest in alternative modes of transportation. The company believes that the development of shortsea shipping reduces dependence on road tolls, mitigates the impact of road congestion, and lowers environmental costs.
