To identify key challenges and potential solutions, the port held consultations with market participants. These consultations revealed that companies face a number of financial and non-financial risks that are hindering investment in import terminals and conversion facilities for hydrogen carriers such as ammonia.<\/p>\n<p>According to the consultations, at least nine companies are developing projects for terminals for the processing of ammonia, methanol, liquid hydrogen, and liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC). These facilities may include further processing of the energy carriers into hydrogen, for example, using ammonia cracking or LOHC dehydrogenation technologies. However, the cost of constructing such terminals reaches several hundred million euros, so investors require greater certainty about future demand for renewable energy and the stability of regulatory policies.<\/p>\n<p>Market participants also pointed to additional barriers, including uncertainty regarding permitting (particularly due to nitrogen emissions requirements and unpredictable process times), grid congestion, and a lack of infrastructure for transporting energy deep into Europe, such as via the Delta Rhine Corridor to Germany. As a result, most companies expect potential terminals to be operational no earlier than 2030.
