Under this agreement, Kuehne+Nagel will utilize Hapag-Lloyd’s “Ship Green” product to reduce the carbon footprint of its maritime shipments; the pilot phase for 2026 targets a reduction of approximately 3,000 tons of CO₂e through shipments traveling between East Asia and Northern Europe. In total, the program covers a cargo volume of approximately 3,300 TEU spanning the period from April to December 2026.

The project utilizes approximately 1,000 tons of certified biofuel derived from waste and residues, fully compliant with RED III requirements. This is expected to prevent approximately 2,979 tons of CO₂e emissions on a well-to-wake basis. The scheme is based on a “book-and-claim” mechanism, which enables customers to account for emission reductions independently of the actual physical allocation of fuel to specific vessels, thereby providing a scalable approach to climate solutions within the logistics sector.

Both companies emphasize that this collaboration strengthens their long-standing partnership and supports their respective climate goals: Hapag-Lloyd aims to achieve carbon neutrality for its fleet by 2045, while Kuehne+Nagel targets carbon neutrality across its entire supply chain by 2050. Representatives from both parties note that data transparency, the development of strategic partnerships, and the adoption of alternative fuels are becoming key drivers in accelerating the maritime industry’s transition toward a more sustainable operational model.

Hapag-Lloyd and Kuehne+Nagel are embarking on their first joint project focused on decarbonizing ocean shipping through the use of Sustainable Marine Fuels (SMF).
