Singapore and Rotterdam strengthen cooperation on green shipping.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Port of Rotterdam have signed an agreement to expand their partnership within the Green and Digital Shipping Corridor, launched in 2022. Since then, the initiative has brought together 28 container logistics players, promoting the use of sustainable fuels along the 15,000-kilometre route and implementing digital solutions. By 2030, the corridor aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from large container ships by 20-30% and accelerate the transition to paperless documentation.

One of the priorities of the cooperation is the development of low-carbon and carbon-free fuels, including bio- and electric versions of ammonia, methanol and methane. Rotterdam has already carried out the first successful refuelling with bio-methane, and similar trials will be held in Singapore in 2025. A life cycle analysis of green ammonia as a marine fuel has also been completed and port readiness standards for its use have been developed.

In the area of digitalisation, the partners are testing the exchange of data on vessel arrivals and departures to optimise operations between ports. A data infrastructure between vessels and shore services has been implemented to automate port procedures. The first phase of testing began in March 2025, with expansion planned for the second half of the year. The progress of these initiatives is being discussed at Singapore Maritime Week.
