Swedish ferry operator Stena Line has completed the expansion of its 12 Quays terminal in Birkenhead, increasing unaccompanied trailer capacity by almost 30%. The addition of 200 new truck parking spaces will reduce congestion and improve logistics as traffic volumes increase following the launch of the Liverpool to Dublin freight service in February 2024.
The terminal handled more than 315,000 freight units in 2023, a record high and a 20% increase on the previous year. The company is also continuing to develop its infrastructure, with the next stage being the redesign of the entrance and car park to improve safety and optimise traffic flows.
Stena Line operates daily freight services on the Liverpool to Dublin (freight only) and Liverpool to Belfast (freight and passengers) routes. Andrew Kane, regional port operations manager, said the project is aimed at preparing for further growth. The development is being carried out in collaboration with terminal operator Peel Ports Group.
