The successful completion of the inaugural test train journey from Kyiv to Rail Cargo Group’s BILK terminal in Budapest is a significant stride towards establishing a reliable and frequent intermodal connection between the two cities, with potential operations commencing by the end of 2023. Using VTG and VEGA’s r2L technology, the test train introduced the transportation of non-craneable semi-trailers carrying construction materials. The route includes stops in Lviv, Ukraine, before reaching Budapest, serving as the gateway to Vienna.

Rail Cargo Group, in collaboration with Ukrainian Railways, developed this service, and the test results met expectations. The next steps involve incorporating the service into regular timetables and evaluating its economic feasibility, considering that the use of advanced technologies may lead to higher costs. ÖBB Rail Cargo Group presented plans for connecting Kyiv and Vienna in May, formalizing the initiative through a memorandum of understanding with Ukrainian Railways on September 14. The agreement entrusts Ukrainian Railways with managing operations within Ukraine, while RCG oversees procedures in the European Union. Despite a slight delay compared to the initially planned August testing, the successful completion of the test train indicates progress in realizing this crucial railway connection.
