On April 27, 2025, the Port of La Spezia welcomed the new Equinox-class containership Alva Maersk, one of Maersk Line’s most modern vessels, capable of carrying up to 16,500 TEU. Launched in March from Singapore, the vessel is on its maiden voyage west on the AE11/SE2 route, part of the Gemini integrated network. Port operations began in the morning and concluded on schedule on the evening of April 28 at the Fornelli berth.

Alva Maersk is one of 18 new dual-fuel containerships capable of running on methanol, biodiesel and conventional fuels. Thanks to its innovative design, with the bridge and accommodation located at the bow and a single funnel at the stern, the vessel provides increased loading efficiency and maximizes capacity. The hull of the vessel bears the slogan “all the way to zero”, reflecting Maersk’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2040.
The vessel’s maiden call also marked another milestone in the collaboration between Maersk and Contship Group, united by the goals of sustainable development. On April 28, a ceremony of exchanging coats of arms took place on board, attended by Captain Alexandru Sofron, representatives of LSCT and the Port Authority of Eastern Liguria.
