The EU is funding the integration of Ukrainian railways into the European system.

Within the framework of the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program, a project to integrate the Ukrainian railway system into the EU transport system was approved. The Coordination Committee of the program approved the application on July 16, 2024. The project envisages the improvement of the railway network and the development of the 1435 mm track to ensure the technological sum and increase the capacity of the railway infrastructure

The total budget of the project is 85.91 million euros, of which CEF will provide Ukrzaliznytsia with 42.95 million euros.

“For the second year in a row, CEF has been allocating funds for the implementation of strategic infrastructure projects that will contribute to the development of the European route in Ukraine, which will open new passenger routes and increase the country’s transit potential,” said Yevhen Lyashchenko, Chairman of the Board of JSC Ukrzaliznytsia.

The project includes the design of the reconstruction of the railway with the introduction of a 1435 mm track on the Chop-Lviv section, the construction of the track and electrification on the route Lviv-Chernivtsi-Vadul-Siret-State Border, as well as the strategy for the reconstruction of the Lviv railway junction. In addition, it is planned to build and electrify the track on the Pavlovo-2/Matievce-Uzhgorod section and electrify the Chop-Uzhgorod section. TSI compliance assessments will also be carried out for these projects and the Kovel-Yahodyn-State Border and Medika/Mostyska II-Lviv (Sknyliv) sections.
