After careful consideration, the Hamburg Senate has decided to proceed with the construction of a new bridge for the Köhlbrand crossing, as revealed in a recently published document. The decision comes as the existing Köhlbrand Bridge nears the end of its operational life and requires replacement.

The new bridge, slated for completion by 2040, promises enhanced clearance for ships, accommodating vessels of current sizes and potentially larger dimensions. This development not only addresses the need for infrastructure renewal but also unlocks opportunities for port expansion and development in the southern region. While the current bridge will remain operational until the new one is completed, future efforts will focus on the transition process, including the dismantling of the existing structure to pave the way for the upcoming replacement.
