The Ports of Gothenburg, the North Sea and the DFDS welcome the addition of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges to the Green Shipping Corridor, reinforcing the environmental ambitions of the project. There are plans to have two ammonia-fuelled ships operating on routes between Sweden and Belgium by 2030, which could make the corridor the world’s first environmentally friendly cargo ship route. Ports are also stepping up efforts to electrify and build ammonia fueling infrastructure.

The 2,500 kilometer Green Shipping Corridor will connect the northern and southern points between Sweden and Belgium, covering 11 European countries. In the corridor, the ports of Gothenburg, the North Sea and Antwerp-Bruges will serve as transport hubs as well as important areas of industrial activity. It is planned that at least two DFDS ammonia fuel vessels will begin operating in this corridor by 2030, supporting the company’s ambition to have six low-emission vessels by 2030.

These vessels will be complemented by electric trucks and rail transport on land, as well as onshore power supply for ships. The partners also intend to begin producing significant amounts of renewable electricity. The signing of a memorandum of understanding in 2022 laid the foundation for the decarbonization of the shipping corridor, and the addition of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges strengthens this commitment.
