The Port of Antwerp-Bruges has enhanced the efficiency of its Noordzee Terminal by increasing the bollard capacity, replacing four 150-tonne bollards with seven new 250-tonne ones. This upgrade aims to optimize space utilization on the quay, minimizing gaps between vessels and addressing the risk of overloading posed by larger ships. The completion of this bollard enhancement, a collaborative effort involving Sweco, SECO Belgium, and Hye NV from Burcht, marks the final step in preparing the terminal to accommodate multiple 24,000 TEU ships with greater efficiency and reduced wasted space.

Over the past 26 years, the Noordzee Terminal has undergone various technical interventions, including deepening the quay wall to accommodate the increasing draft of larger ships. The newly installed bollards play a crucial role in maximizing quay length, allowing for the streamlined docking of modern vessels. The project involved extensive calculations considering factors like sailing speed, water displacement, wind, tide, and mooring rope types. Sweco and SECO Belgium conducted thorough studies, pushing the limits of feasibility, while the collaboration with PSA Antwerp ensured precise location determination and fulfillment of preconditions. The successful execution of this project underscores the commitment to advancing infrastructure and safety standards at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges.
