The Klaipeda State Seaport Authority has announced the start of the procurement process for contractors for the first stage of the southern port development. The selected contractor will build the southern port gate, marking the starting point of a large-scale port infrastructure expansion project. Algis Latakas, General Director of the Port of Klaipeda, noted that the need to develop the southern zone has been emphasized for several years, and the announcement of the tender is a tangible step toward the launch of the largest project in the port’s history, with construction scheduled to begin this year.
The southern port gate, including breakwaters, is of significant ecological significance and will eventually become part of a multifunctional complex with a marina and berth. Completion of this stage will usher in the full-fledged development of the southern port, which is seen as a key reserve for further growth. Currently, the Port of Klaipeda is experiencing a shortage of available land, limiting the possibility of expansion and the placement of new facilities.
The Klaipėda Southern Port development project involves the reclamation of approximately 100 hectares of new port land and the construction of 1.3 kilometers of new berths. The expansion will create new terminals and accommodate the world’s largest vessels, strengthening Klaipėda’s position as one of the leading ports in the Baltic region.
