The Port of Riga has completed several major construction projects aimed at improving its infrastructure, significantly enhancing both military mobility and commercial competitiveness. One of the key developments is the extension of the port’s berth, which now allows the accommodation and faster processing of larger container ships, ro-ro vessels, and military cargo ships. This project, titled “Increasing the dual use capacity of the Port of Riga,” is a collaborative effort between the Freeport of Riga Authority, the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Agency (CINEA), and SIA “Baltic Container Terminal” (BCT).
In June, the extended berth KS-34 was put into operation, marking a major milestone in the project. The berth was lengthened by 57.3 meters, bringing the total length to 506.3 meters, enabling the simultaneous accommodation of two large vessels. This extension accelerates the loading and unloading process, thus increasing the terminal’s efficiency and commercial competitiveness. Moreover, the extended berth enhances military mobility by facilitating the handling of military vessels. Additionally, the Freeport of Riga Authority has announced a tender for dredging works at the reconstructed part of berth KS-34 to ensure its full functionality by year-end.
Another significant achievement is the completion of the rebuilt level crossing at Uriekstes Street near the port control post to Kundziņsala. This crossing is crucial for rail traffic to the Kundziņsala port terminals, which manage both commercial and military cargo. The reconstruction included dismantling the old overpasses, rebuilding water and sewerage systems, constructing a new embankment, and enhancing the storm water drainage system. This improved infrastructure will ensure more efficient and durable operations at the port. The entire project is slated for completion by the end of 2024, with the final phase, connecting the BCT container terminal to the freight vehicle parking area, scheduled for completion by October this year.
