Belgium and Houston-based partners have taken a significant step towards transatlantic collaboration on green energy transition. Prime Minister Alexander De Croo witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Center for Houston’s Future, Waterstofnet, Port Houston, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Exmar, and the Blue Sky Maritime Coalition. The agreement focuses on establishing a mutually beneficial partnership for renewable and low-carbon molecule import-export, creating a green shipping corridor, and facilitating the exchange of knowledge, best practices, and research.

The Greater Houston Area, a major global energy production hub, sees potential for future renewable and low-carbon energy exports. Belgium, strategically positioned in the heart of Europe, plays a crucial role as an energy hub, particularly in the import and transit of renewable and low-carbon molecules through the Port of Antwerp-Bruges. Both Houston and Antwerp, being the largest petrochemical clusters globally, share a strong commercial maritime connection, providing a solid foundation for this cooperative effort.

The Blue Sky Maritime Coalition, comprised of over 120 member organizations, including leadership from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), is actively engaged in promoting maritime decarbonization and the transportation of clean energy fuels. The signing of the MoU marks the initial phase of formalizing this strategic alliance, inviting other stakeholders on both sides to join and contribute to the roadmap for implementation.
