Transit transportation by KTZ continues to grow, despite its moderate share in freight turnover.

The volume of transit rail traffic on the network of JSC NC Kazakhstan Temir Zholy is demonstrating steady positive dynamics. At the end of 2024, transit amounted to 27.5 million tons, and for the first 11 months of 2025, this figure has already reached 27.9 million tons, exceeding the entire previous year’s total. However, transit remains a relatively small portion of the company’s overall freight turnover.

According to KTZ, shipments are carried out in four directions: domestic, export, import, and transit. Domestic shipments account for the largest share at 56%, followed by export at 28%, transit at up to 10%, and import at approximately 6%. This structure reflects the priority of domestic and export freight traffic while maintaining a stable transit segment.

Transit through Kazakhstan is carried out along key international routes, including China-Europe and Central Asia, Russia and Belarus-China, Russia-Central Asia, as well as along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route and North-South corridors. The main types of transit cargo include petroleum products, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, chemicals, mineral fertilizers, grain, construction materials, iron ore, timber, machinery, equipment, and food products.
