Plastic recycling startup Xycle has secured funding to build its first commercial plant in the Port of Rotterdam. The funding comes from a consortium of investors including Dow, ING, Invest-NL, Vopak and lender Polestar Capital. The plant is scheduled to open by the end of 2026 and will be able to process 21,000 tonnes of plastic waste annually, turning it into feedstock for new products.

Xycle’s technology is based on low-temperature pyrolysis, which enables complex plastic waste to be converted into pyrolysis oil. This process makes it possible to reuse plastic in high-tech industries such as medical devices, food packaging and automotive components. One of the key partners in the project is Dow, which will use the resulting feedstock to produce environmentally friendly plastics sought after by global brands.

The strategic location of the Xycle plant in Rotterdam will provide access to a well-developed logistics network for the reception of plastic waste and the transportation of recycled materials. The flexibility of the modular design of the plant will allow for the future expansion of its capacity to 100,000 tons per year and the scaling of the technology to international markets.
