APM Terminals and Hateco Group are investing $1.7 billion in the construction of the Lien Chieu deep-water container port in Da Nang.

APM Terminals (part of the Maersk Group) and Vietnam’s Hateco Group have signed an agreement with the authorities of Da Nang for the construction and operation of the Lien Chieu container port complex, located on the South China Sea coast in central Vietnam. The project entails an investment of over $1.7 billion and is set to become a key infrastructure asset for the region.

During the first phase – following the commissioning of Berths No. 1 and No. 2 – the terminal’s throughput capacity will reach 4 million TEU per year. Subsequently, following the completion of deep-water Berths No. 3 through No. 8, the facility’s capacity will exceed 5.7 million TEU. The combined length of the eight berths will total 2,750 meters, with the launch of the complex’s first phase scheduled for early 2029. Construction will utilize hydro-technical structures, access roads, and engineering infrastructure already established by the city.

The Lien Chieu Port will be the only deep-water container port in central Vietnam capable of accommodating vessels with a capacity of up to 18,000 TEU. The complex will feature container yards and warehousing facilities, and will be connected via rail to industrial parks and the Da Nang Free Economic Zone. The port is expected to operate as a “green” and “smart” facility, leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, artificial intelligence, and clean energy solutions to minimize emissions.
