The Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway reopened on June 2 after modernization works on the Georgian section of the corridor.

Azerbaijan Railways carried out the works in 2024 on the 184 km section of the BTK railway in Georgia. The project increased the corridor’s annual freight capacity from 1 million tonnes to 5 million tonnes.

The five-phase modernization covered 13 railway stations, 55 bridges, eight traction substations and 320 buildings. It also included engineering structures such as overpasses and crossings.

The works included 30.3 km of new track, the construction of a wheelset-changing facility, and the rehabilitation and reconstruction of 153.1 km of existing railway infrastructure.

The BTK railway opened in 2017 as a rail link between Azerbaijan, Georgia and Türkiye. It forms part of the Middle Corridor route linking China and Central Asia with Europe.
