Discussions revolved around current and future projects of the port aimed at transforming the Middle Corridor into a sustainable digital green corridor. The delegation also expressed interest in establishing mutually beneficial collaboration with Chinese companies in expanding logistics and port operations, taking into account the strategic geographical position of Azerbaijan and the infrastructure capabilities of the port.

Kazakhstan’s ambitious goal: fivefold increase in cargo transit from China to Europe by 2029

ASTANA – Kazakhstan is set to significantly boost cargo transit from China to Europe through its territory, aiming for a five-fold increase by 2029, as announced by Deputy Minister of Transport, Satzhan Ablaliyev, during a government meeting chaired by Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov on December 5. In the initial nine months of this year, road freight transportation reached 5.5 million tons, marking a 22% increase compared to the same period last year, with domestic operators contributing 42% to this share. Transit transportation saw a notable surge of 44%, reaching 3.6 million tons, with China accounting for a substantial portion, doubling cargo transportation to 1.5 million tons.

Resumption of goods transport: China to Azerbaijan via block trains

In a significant milestone, the inaugural shipment from China to Azerbaijan via a container block train has been successfully completed. The train, originating from China, has reached its destination at the Baku port, marking the first of such journeys. A diverse cargo comprising 110 TEUs, encompassing electric vehicles, construction materials, and industrial products, has been transported from China to Azerbaijan.
