Kazakhstan is making a significant investment in four major railway projects aimed at enhancing logistics, as reported by the Ministry of Transport. Within the framework of the national project “Dostyk – Moynqty,” the construction of second tracks and electrification of a 833 km railway segment is planned, with a total investment volume of 938.1 billion tenge. It is anticipated that these measures will increase the capacity of the segment fivefold, with the transportation speed between China and Europe reaching 1,500 km per day.

New freight semi-wagons produced by the Kazakhstan Wagon Construction Company (KWCC) in Ekibastuz have joined the expanding fleet of freight wagons at Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ). With the addition of 50 new domestically manufactured semi-wagons, the overall fleet is now equipped with modern technology meeting all requirements and boasting a payload capacity of 70 tons. These wagons come with a certificate of compliance with the Customs Union standards.

A groundbreaking rail logistics terminal is now in the construction phase in Almaty, Kazakhstan, marking a collaborative effort between KTZ and China’s Xi’an Dry Port. The primary objective is to establish a cutting-edge terminal serving the growing volumes of e-commerce. KTZ has set the wheels in motion with its ambitious Program to Increase the Capacity of the Railway Infrastructure, charting out a strategic plan to dissolve current bottlenecks in the network. This comprehensive program envisions a variety of improvements set to unfold by 2030, including the extension of existing station tracks, construction of additional ones, establishment of new operational points, and the rollout of automated blocking systems. Moreover, the program ambitiously plans for the construction of secondary tracks to bolster network capacity.

Almaty’s role as a key node in global trade is set for significant enhancement with the initiation of a new logistics terminal on October 27, 2023. The project, an ambitious step to craft a contemporary platform for transport, logistics, and e-commerce services, is underway in Kazakhstan’s bustling metropolis.

The collaborative vision that emerged in early 2022 among Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Georgian railways has materialized into a groundbreaking reality. These nations have formally inked a deal to establish a joint venture, ‘Middle Corridor Multimodal Ltd.’ The venture aims to streamline services on a one-stop-shop principle, ensuring delivery time guarantees, and pursuing a coordinated strategy to enhance multimodal services along the China–Europe and Turkey–China routes.
