Container carrier Hapag-Lloyd has signed an agreement with the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) to utilize shore power at all of the port’s terminals. The company confirmed its intention to connect vessels to the onshore grid wherever technically and operationally feasible, and to continue integrating Onshore Power Supply (OPS) technology into its fleet operations.
In recent weeks, the container ships Al Muraykh and Tihama have already successfully utilized shore power during port calls in Hamburg. Both vessels operate on the NE2 service, which connects Asia and Northern Europe. As Hapag-Lloyd CEO Rolf Habben Jansen noted, the use of shore power is a key component of the company’s strategy to reduce port-related emissions and achieve a carbon-neutral fleet by 2045.
Shore power enables vessels to draw electricity from the onshore grid while docked, thereby helping to lower emission levels in port areas. Hapag-Lloyd emphasized that all new vessels are being equipped with the necessary technology for shore power connection, while suitable ships in the existing fleet are undergoing retrofitting. Currently, approximately 35% of the carrier’s fleet is fully equipped to utilize this technology.
