The CMA CGM Group has carried out the first bio-liquefied natural gas (bio-LNG) bunkering operation for its new container ship, the CMA CGM Notre Dame. With a capacity of 24,000 TEU, the vessel is the world’s largest container ship powered by this type of fuel. The volume of bio-LNG supplied totaled 11,125 cubic meters, making this one of the largest operations of its kind globally and the largest bunkering operation in CMA CGM’s history.
The fuel used was produced in Europe from biomethane derived from agricultural and organic waste. The bio-LNG delivery was performed using a TotalEnergies bunkering vessel. The CMA CGM Notre Dame, which entered service in May 2026 under the French flag, is designed to run on LNG and is fully compatible with bio-LNG, as well as future synthetic fuels such as e-methane.
The new container ship has a capacity of 24,212 TEU and is equipped with 1,600 reefer plugs. CMA CGM continues to expand one of the world’s largest fleets of dual-fuel vessels and invest in the decarbonization of maritime transport. The company has set a goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
