Kazakhstan’s transport sector increased its traffic volume by 11.9% in early 2026.

In January–February 2026, Kazakhstan’s transport sector demonstrated growth. According to the Bureau of National Statistics, the physical volume index of services in the “Transport and Warehousing” sector was 110.7% compared to the same period in 2025. In January, this figure reached 105.1%, and in February, 110.7%, indicating a gradual recovery and strengthening of business activity in the sector.

In the first two months of 2026, all modes of transport in the country transported 163.3 million tons of freight, an 11.9% increase year-on-year. However, freight turnover decreased by 1.3% to 88.6 billion tonne-kilometers. Passenger traffic also increased: 317.4 million people used transport (+9.8%), and passenger turnover increased by 2.2% to 14 billion passenger-kilometers. In February, freight turnover was 91.7% of the same month last year, while passenger turnover increased to 101.3%.

Road transport demonstrated the most significant growth, with freight volumes increasing by 25.5% and freight turnover by 2.4%. Rail transport carried 62.4 million tonnes of freight (+14.2%), with freight turnover remaining virtually unchanged at 54.6 billion tonne-kilometers (-0.1%). However, passenger traffic by rail decreased by 4.7% to 3.1 million passengers. Pipeline transport volumes decreased to 40.1 million tonnes (-6%) and freight turnover by 4.5%. In aviation, passenger traffic increased to 2.2 million passengers (+1.1%), while passenger turnover increased by 7.3%. Sea transport carried 619,800 tonnes of freight, a 10.8% decrease year-on-year. Overall, statistics show an increase in transportation volumes with a decrease in freight turnover, which may indicate an increase in the share of short routes and a redistribution of transport flows within the country.
