Norwegian airport operator Avinor has unveiled a long-term development concept for Oslo Airport, aimed at addressing current infrastructure constraints. The focus is on the lack of aircraft parking spaces during peak hours and the rapid growth of the cargo sector. The modernization project aims to enable the airport to handle growing volumes of both passenger and cargo traffic.
A key element of the plan will be the relocation of the existing cargo area to the western part of the airport. New cargo and logistics terminals are planned here, which will significantly increase capacity and improve the resilience of supply chains. For Norway, where air travel plays a critical role in seafood exports, Oslo Airport serves as a strategic international hub. Freeing up the current cargo space will create additional opportunities for expanding passenger infrastructure and launching new air routes.
In addition to developing the cargo area, Avinor intends to improve the efficiency of existing runways through operational and technical solutions, including accelerated taxiways. This will increase the number of flights without constructing a third runway and ensure the airport’s continued growth. The project is scheduled to be completed by 2040, with the relocation of cargo infrastructure being the first stage, pending investment decisions and approvals.
