Polish national carrier PKP Intercity signed a cooperation agreement with Ukrzaliznytsia for PLN 17.956 million. According to the agreement, the Ukrainian operator will provide rail services within Poland on behalf of the Polish company. The contract, signed on March 5, is for a period of 36 months and governs the organization of international passenger service between the two countries.
While the details of the document remain a commercial secret, it can be assumed that the agreement concerns services from Ukraine to Warsaw, Przemyśl, and Kholm, which already use Ukrzaliznytsia rolling stock and employ Ukrainian stewards. The contract was concluded through negotiations without an open tender, as PKP Intercity explained that for technical reasons, only one operator could provide these services. The company emphasized that this format is fully compliant with Polish public procurement laws.
The signing of the new agreement coincides with the Polish authorities’ plans to modernize border infrastructure. In particular, a new passenger processing terminal is planned for construction at the railway crossing in Dorohusk, which could impact the further development of rail service between Poland and Ukraine.
