The Barcelona Port Authority has announced a tender for the construction of a new transport interchange valued at over €98 million. The project aims to improve transport accessibility to the southern section of the port and integrate new access routes into the existing road network. The decision to launch the tender was made by the Port’s Board of Directors as part of a program for the further expansion of port infrastructure.
A key element of the project will be a major multi-level roundabout, which is to be constructed over the former mouth of the Llobregat River. This new facility is intended to serve as the central hub for distributing vehicular traffic within the port area, providing connections to the Prat Pier and the future Catalonia Pier. It is expected that the project’s implementation will significantly enhance traffic flow efficiency and reduce congestion on existing roads.
Port officials note that the construction of the new interchange is essential to meet the growing demand for transport services that will arise following the commissioning of new terminals and access routes. Construction work is estimated to take three and a half years, after which the upgraded infrastructure is expected to provide additional opportunities for the continued development of one of the largest ports in the Mediterranean.
