The Port of Klaipeda will become the operator of the berth in Jurbarkas for the development of an inland cargo port.

Klaipeda Port Authority and Jurbarkas District Municipality have signed an agreement under which the Authority will become the operator of one of the berths on the Nemunas. This step paves the way for the development of an inland cargo port in Jurbarkas, which will allow river shipping to be used as a strategically important and environmentally friendly alternative for cargo transportation in Lithuania.

According to Algis Latakas, Director General of the Port of Klaipeda, the project will create a modern and sustainable river hub in Jurbarkas, where not only grain handling but also its storage will be developed. An investment plan for the development of the facility was prepared in advance, and over the next three years the Authority intends to invest at least €1 million in the creation of the necessary infrastructure and terminal capacities.

Jurbarkas, located on the Nemunas in western Lithuania, has a long tradition of river transport and a favorable geographical location. With the new project, it will become an important link in the national logistics system, connecting inland waterways with the country’s transport network.
