The Port of Rotterdam has entrusted Vialis with the complete renovation of the Rosenburg Lock.

The Rozenburg Lock, through which around 20,000 ships pass each year, is preparing for a major renovation. The Port of Rotterdam Authority has signed a contract with Vialis, which will undertake the next stage of the modernisation of the complex, as well as long-term maintenance. The agreement was concluded between Berte Simons, Chief Operating Officer of the Port, and Max Mørke, Managing Director of Vialis.

The project covers the complete renovation of the entire infrastructure: the lock chamber with gates, two bridges, buildings, the surrounding area, as well as the control and monitoring systems. Work will begin after the modernisation of the northern protection piles, which is completed in 2024. In 2026, the lock will be closed for six months. After the project is completed in 2027, the lock will be operated remotely by the Harbour Master’s staff from the Maritime Traffic Centre Rotterdam.

The lock on the Neckarweg connects the Kalandkanal and the Hartelkanal, providing an important link for inland shipping. “The existing elements are reaching the end of their service life, and reconstruction is not only necessary, but also a more sustainable solution than building a new lock,” Simons said. Vialis stressed that the project will be an example of an integrated modernization of a key transport hub with a priority on safety and reliability.
