The rise of iPort Rail: Prospects for significant growth and a new stage of development under the management of Verdion

iPort Rail, located within the iPort logistics development in Doncaster, is poised for substantial growth in 2024 under the management of Verdion. Nestled in the northern reaches of England, this versatile freight terminal has become a top choice for multimodal freight operators, benefiting from its strategic proximity to the East Coast Main Line.

Despite its complex hierarchy, iPort Rail’s intermodal rail freight operation has thrived, with robust connections to UK maritime port operations paving the way for a significant expansion, doubling the scale of rail operations. Launched in 2018 by HRH The Princess Royal, iPort Rail currently offers daily services to Southampton, Felixstowe, Immingham, and Teesport, holding Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) status for secure international goods transit.

Verdion, the UK subsidiary of Medlog and MSC, is set to assume control of iPort Rail’s operations, signaling a notable development for road hauliers and rail freight entities. With an intent to expand generating community buzz, Verdion secures a long-term lease, anticipating completion of the handover in Q1 2024. Under Medlog’s oversight, container lifting and storage will maintain the existing team of 27, prioritizing seamless service for current clients. As part of this transformative agreement, Verdion initiates Phase 2 of iPort Rail, doubling the terminal’s size, storage capacity, and daily train accommodations. With planning consent secured, construction begins in Q1 2024, aiming for the expanded terminal to be operational by Q1 2025. Situated near major highways and linked to the East Coast Main Line, iPort stands as a premier UK multimodal logistics hub, covering 800 acres with notable occupants like Amazon, CEVA, Fellowes, Lidl, Woodland Group, Maritime Group, and Euro Pool Systems.
