Today, Kazakhstan’s railway system is pivotal to meeting the country’s economic export demands, with shipments reaching 70.7 million tons this year, marking an 8.5% increase. A comprehensive program by Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) aims to ensure smooth transportation through repairs, maintenance, infrastructure modernization, and new rail lines.
Over the past ten months, railway freight transport has totaled 246 million tons, expected to reach 300 million tons by year-end. KTZ is actively implementing initiatives to eliminate bottleneck areas, extend existing tracks, open new junctions, implement automatic blocking systems, and construct secondary tracks. Currently, four major infrastructure projects are underway, covering a total distance of 1334 km.
In efforts to revitalize the rolling stock, KTZ is acquiring over 550 locomotives, including passenger and freight wagons. The Prime Minister of Kazakhstan has directed focused efforts to accelerate the renewal of the rolling stock fleet, targeting a 40% reduction in wear and tear by 2029.
