By the end of 2025, the Port of Shanghai’s cargo throughput increased by 3.4 percent compared to 2024, reaching 600 million tonnes. Container throughput also showed strong growth, reaching 55.06 million TEU, a 6.9 percent increase over the previous year, confirming the port’s status as the world’s largest container hub.
The key driver of this increase in throughput was the Yangshan deepwater area, whose terminals handled 28.71 million TEU in 2025. This area continues to play a crucial role in supporting the rapid growth of container shipping and handling large-capacity vessels.
By comparison, in 2024, the Port of Shanghai became the first port in the world to surpass the 50 million TEU mark, recording container throughput of 51.5 million TEU with a total throughput of 580.5 million tonnes. The figures achieved in 2025 indicate a further strengthening of the port’s position in the global maritime transport market.
