CargoBeamer, a leading operator of intermodal rail transport for semi-trailers, launched a new regular service between Liège (Belgium) and Domodossola (Italy). The first trains departed on this route last week. The launch of the line marks CargoBeamer’s first foray into the Belgian market, an important logistics hub with a well-developed road and air infrastructure, and strengthens the company’s presence on the trans-Alpine route, following the discontinuation of the Rolling Highway service between Germany and Italy at the end of 2025.
Initially, the Liège-Domodossola route will be served with a frequency of three return journeys per week. In the second quarter of 2026, the company plans to increase the frequency to six journeys per week and simultaneously extend the service further into northern Italy. The line is designed to handle all major types of freight units, including craneable and non-craneable semi-trailers, refrigerated trucks, ADR and tank containers, containers, swap bodies, and specialized equipment. Rail traction on the route is provided by BLS Cargo, with operations in Belgium conducted at the Liège Logistics Intermodal Terminal and in Italy at the DB Cargo Transa / FLS terminal in Domodossola. Using this service reduces CO₂ emissions by approximately 86% compared to road transport.
The launch of the new connection comes at a critical time for the transalpine intermodal market, which is experiencing capacity shortages following the shutdown of the Rolling Highway. The new CargoBeamer service is designed to accommodate some of this freight traffic, offering a scalable model for unaccompanied intermodal transport. With the Liège-Domodossola route, the company expands its presence on the Rhine-Mediterranean corridor and now operates three transalpine routes with over 50 trains per week. As Boris Timm, Chief Operating Officer of CargoBeamer, noted, the new service not only opens the company to the promising Belgian market but also provides shippers with a viable alternative to the closed Alpine road and rail network.
