CargoBeamer has launched a new intermodal route between Belgium and Italy.

CargoBeamer, one of Europe’s leading operators of intermodal semi-trailer rail transport, has launched a new service between Liège (Belgium) and Domodossola (Italy). Operations on this route began last week. The new service marks CargoBeamer’s first foray into the Belgian market, which plays a key role in European road and air logistics, and strengthens the company’s transalpine intermodal offerings following the closure of the Rolling Highway service between Germany and Italy at the end of 2025.

The Liège-Domodossola service will initially operate with a frequency of three return trips per week. In the second quarter of 2026, the service is planned to increase to six trips per week, with a simultaneous extension to northern Italy. The service is designed to transport all major types of cargo units, including crane and non-crane semi-trailers, refrigerated trucks, ADR and tank containers, containers, swap bodies, and specialized equipment. Rail traction on the route is provided by BLS Cargo. In Belgium, trains are handled at the Liège Logistics Intermodal Terminal, and in Italy, at the DB Cargo Transa/FLS terminal in Domodossola. The company estimates that using the service reduces CO₂ emissions by approximately 86% compared to diesel-powered road transport.

The launch of the new route comes at a critical time for the transalpine intermodal market. Following the closure of the Rolling Highway, capacity for transporting non-crane semi-trailers across the Alps has come under pressure, and the new CargoBeamer service is designed to partially absorb these volumes, transferring them to a scalable, unaccompanied intermodal transport model. With the opening of the Liège-Domodossola line, the company has expanded its presence on the Rhine-Mediterranean corridor and now operates three transalpine routes with over 50 trains per week. According to Boris Timm, Chief Operating Officer of CargoBeamer, the new route not only opens access to the promising Belgian market but also offers freight forwarders a practical alternative to the closed Rolling Highway service.
