New cranes have been installed at the Port of Antwerp as part of the modernisation of the Europa Terminal.

Installation of five new Ship-to-Shore (STS) quay cranes has begun at the Europa Container Terminal in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, marking a major milestone in the facility’s extensive modernization. The new equipment will increase the terminal’s operational capacity and ensure the efficient handling of the largest container ships, strengthening the port’s position as cargo flows grow.

Once installed, the cranes will reach a height of 52 meters and will be able to handle vessels up to 26 containers wide, with a boom reach of 71.8 meters and a lifting capacity of up to 112 tons. They are equipped with modern digital and safety solutions, including remote diagnostics, precise control and monitoring systems, and improved ergonomic cabins. VR training for staff is also being introduced, enhancing safety and operational efficiency.

The modernization of the Europa Terminal is being implemented by a consortium including PSA Antwerp, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, and contractors and is expected to last approximately 10 years. The project envisions a phased renovation of the quay wall and infrastructure without disrupting terminal operations. The first phase will see a 500-meter section of the quay deepened to 16 meters to accommodate modern vessels, and the installation of a shore-based power supply system, which will reduce CO2 emissions and improve the port’s environmental situation.
