The Baltic countries are launching a joint procurement of trains for Rail Baltica.

Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have announced the start of a joint procurement of passenger trains for the Rail Baltica project, marking the next step in developing the region’s unified rail network. According to Estonian Infrastructure Minister Kuldar Leis, the project strengthens transport connectivity between the Baltic states and the rest of Europe, while also promoting economic development and enhancing security on the EU’s eastern border.

The new electric trains will operate on the 1435 mm European gauge line, providing faster, more comfortable, and more environmentally friendly travel. The tender includes the option to purchase up to 20 trains: Estonia plans to purchase five trains with an expandable gauge, Latvia up to five, and Lithuania up to eight. The project is being implemented in coordination with national operators Elron, Vivi, and LTG Link, ensuring full compatibility of the rolling stock and infrastructure for seamless cross-border service.

Representatives from the countries note that Rail Baltica is not only a transport project but also a strategic one, enhancing the region’s resilience and its integration into Europe. The procurement of rolling stock is seen as a crucial step in meeting the project’s deadline, emphasizing the need for the synchronized development of both infrastructure and rail fleet. The tender has been published in Estonia, and the deadline for applications is May 4.
