The Port of Gdańsk began 2026 with double-digit growth in cargo turnover.

In the first quarter of 2026, the Port of Gdańsk handled 20.9 million tons of cargo – a 13.6% increase compared to the same period in 2025. The port thereby reaffirms its position as one of the key transit hubs in the Baltic region, ensuring the stability of cargo flows amidst volatile global logistics and geopolitical risks.

Liquid fuels continue to account for the largest share of traffic – 47.7% of the total volume, or nearly 10 million tons (+7% year-on-year) – underscoring Gdańsk’s critical importance for the region’s energy security. Containerized and general cargo segments also demonstrated substantial growth: total volume rose by 15.7% to over 7.2 million tons, while container throughput increased by 22% to 761,896 TEU. In terms of tonnage, this segment exceeded 6.5 million tons (+17.2%), reflecting heightened economic activity and the Polish economy’s resilience to external shocks.

Bulk and raw material cargoes also exhibited strong momentum: coal volumes surged by 70% (reaching nearly 2 million tons) against the backdrop of increased winter energy consumption; ore rose by 111%; timber by 89%; and grain by 21%. Conversely, volumes declined for other bulk cargoes (-11%), Ro-Ro traffic (-29.6%), and passenger ferry services (-20.8%). Port management notes that if current trends persist, 2026 could prove to be a record-breaking year; however, definitive projections will only be possible closer to the end of the year.
