JSC “NC ‘Kazakhstan Temir Zholy’” (KTZ) is implementing a large-scale railway network modernization program involving the renewal of over 3,000 kilometers of track. To date, work has been completed on 1,209 kilometers across the Kyzylzhar–Saksaulskaya, Altynkol–Zhetygen, and Aksu–Zhana-Semey sections, with the entire suite of projects scheduled for completion in 2026.
Concurrently, a track repair campaign is underway across Kazakhstan, targeting the renewal of 1,577 kilometers of railway track. Operations began in the southern regions in February and expanded nationwide with the arrival of warmer weather; 288 kilometers of track were repaired in the first quarter alone. These measures aim to increase network capacity, enhance traffic safety, and maintain established speed limits.
KTZ notes that the modernization is being carried out under demanding operational conditions, requiring the scheduling of specific “work windows” to ensure safety. High-traffic routes – including Astana–Almaty, Astana–Tobol, Kokshetau–Kostanay, Kandyagash–Tobol, Astana–Pavlodar, and Arys–Saryagash – are currently subject to temporary speed restrictions, which may impact passenger and freight schedules. The company emphasizes that these measures are designed to improve infrastructure reliability and the quality of transport services, and it asks passengers and shippers to show understanding regarding the temporary restrictions.
