China’s shipbuilding industry retained its first place in the global market by the end of 2025, based on three key indicators: completed shipbuilding, new orders, and order backlog. This was reported by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People’s Republic of China, which emphasized that the country has maintained its leadership for the 16th consecutive year.
During the year, Chinese shipyards completed ships with a total tonnage of 53.69 million dwt, an 11.4% increase compared to 2024. Thus, China accounted for 56.1% of the global tonnage commissioned.
New orders in 2025 reached 107.82 million dwt, accounting for 69% of the global market. As of the end of December, the order book of Chinese shipbuilders grew to 274.42 million deadweight tons, 31.5% more than a year earlier, which corresponds to 66.8% of the global share.
