Kyrgyzstan plans to increase rail freight turnover to 15 million tons per year as part of its national economic development program through 2030. This was announced by Urmat Takirov, director of the Ministry of Economy’s relevant center, speaking at the B5+1 forum on US-Central Asian cooperation.
According to him, the program includes specific measures to increase the capacity of the transport system, primarily railways. By the end of 2025, rail freight volumes will have reached 10 million tons, compared to a previously stable level of around 7 million tons, demonstrating the sector’s steady growth.
In addition to developing railway infrastructure, Kyrgyzstan plans a large-scale expansion of logistics capacity, including the construction of at least 1 million square meters of warehouse space and the reconstruction of key highways. By 2030, the transport sector is expected to contribute up to $1.5 billion annually to the country’s economy.
