METRANS and INTERPORT are modernizing the intermodal terminal near Košice, creating a new logistics hub for Eastern Europe.

METRANS, a subsidiary of HHLA, and INTERPORT Servis are launching a joint project to modernize the TIP Košice intermodal terminal near Košice, which is expected to become a key logistics hub on the EU’s eastern border. The new hub will combine METRANS’s experience in European rail transport with INTERPORT’s regional expertise, creating a modern infrastructure for international freight flows and strengthening Slovakia’s importance as a transit hub between the EU and Ukraine.

The terminal will be equipped with dual-gauge infrastructure – a combination of European gauge and wide tracks – allowing for the efficient transhipment of freight arriving, including from Ukraine, onto European-standard trains. The facility will also feature two new overhead cranes, an expanded cargo handling and storage area, and the implementation of digital and automated technologies. The partners emphasize that TIP Košice will become a model for sustainable growth, shortening supply chains, promoting local employment, and raising infrastructure and environmental standards.

The current METRANS terminal near Košice has been operating within the company’s network since 2008 and occupies approximately 50,000 m². The new development phase will significantly increase capacity, with completion scheduled for 2027, making the facility one of the most modern logistics hubs in the region.
