Newcastle Airport has announced the launch of AirLink, a massive 69,700m² cargo hub that will boost the North East of England’s economy by £165m a year and create up to 2,600 jobs. The facility, located south of the runway, will provide direct apron access for efficient cargo handling.
The project is being delivered in partnership with Naylors Gavin Black and will target cargo operators, freight forwarders and ground handlers. The new hub will support key industries including pharmaceuticals and automotive, strengthening the region’s logistics sector and its international trade links. The airport handled more than 6,000 tonnes of cargo in 2024 and is now looking for business partners to collaborate with.
According to Alice Andreasen, director of sustainability and communications at the airport, AirLink will be a major step in the development of cargo at Newcastle. An application for planning permission will be submitted later this year, with a developer already selected for the project.
