ÖBB-Infrastruktur unveils ambitious plans for new railway line

ÖBB-Infrastruktur, the infrastructure operator, has announced plans for the construction of a new railway line spanning 21.5 km, including a 16.2 km-long Flachgau tunnel. This route will pass beneath the town of Fischbach, nearing Salzburg, with a focus on minimizing the impact on the environment and wildlife listed in the Red Book.

The project includes special measures to reduce noise and dust emissions, along with a commitment from ÖBB-Infrastruktur to transport construction materials and waste exclusively by rail. The new railway line will increase the capacity of the Vienna to Salzburg section, accommodating regional trains on the existing route and high-speed trains on the new one.

Upon receiving environmental approval, ÖBB-Infrastruktur will commence detailed planning and tender processes. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the expected operation of the railway line in 2040.
