At A.P. Moller – Maersk, there is a firm belief in the potential of global trade as a catalyst for development, provided it is conducted responsibly and sustainably. Following careful considerations, extensive consultations with local and international stakeholders, and elevated human rights due diligence, Maersk has determined that, with the right measures in place, it can continue its operations in Myanmar while upholding its commitment to responsible business practices. Since the coup in February 2021, Maersk has closely monitored the situation in Myanmar, prioritizing the health and well-being of its employees, supporting customers, and contributing to the local economy.
Maersk has been offering container transport and logistics services in Myanmar since 2013, playing a significant role in the country’s trade activities across Ocean, Air freight, Consolidation services, and landside operations. With more than 300 local employees in Yangon and reliance on local supply chains, Maersk has a direct impact on the lives of at least 12,500 people in Myanmar. The company is committed to responsible business conduct, guided by its values, Code of Conduct, and Human Rights Policy Statement.
In 2023, Maersk, with the assistance of external experts, conducted an in-depth human rights due diligence assessment across its value chain in Myanmar. The assessment included a conflict risk analysis, evaluation of human rights risks, extensive engagement with rightsholders and stakeholders, and an examination of Maersk’s management systems to prevent or mitigate such risks. The overall findings indicated that Maersk can operate responsibly in Myanmar, supported by robust management systems. Identified areas for improvement, mainly related to inland logistics and ports in the supply chain, are being actively addressed. The assessment also provided recommendations to enhance existing management processes, particularly in the company’s warehouse operations in Myanmar, with low human rights risks for seafarers and office employees due to effective management processes.
