SBO rail freight rises to 1.23m tonnes in 2025.

Sächsische Binnenhäfen Oberelbe (SBO) increased rail freight throughput across its port network to 1.23m tonnes in 2025, up 1.85% year on year.

Rail volumes grew at the Saxon ports of Dresden (+2.75%), Riesa (+2.53%) and Torgau (+20.14%), as well as at Děčín in the Czech Republic (+9.59%). Key commodities transported by rail included trailers, timber products, scrap metal, grain, soybean meal, fertilisers and salt.

At the TrailerPort in Dresden’s Alberthafen, 26,817 semi-trailers were transferred from road to rail in 2025, representing more than 667,000 tonnes. This corresponds to an increase of 6,446 trailers or 31.64% compared with the previous year.

Container traffic in the Port of Riesa reached 26,763 TEU, up 1.47% or 387 TEU year on year. The site also provides container-related logistics services, including maintenance and technical modifications.

SBO plans to expand rail-based combined transport capacity in Riesa with a new trimodal terminal scheduled for completion by 2028. The project предусматриes up to six loading tracks for rail freight and a handling capacity of up to 100,000 TEU per year, supported by two gantry cranes for transhipment between rail, inland waterway vessels and road vehicles.

Rail operations contrasted with weaker inland waterway performance on the Upper Elbe, where infrastructure disruptions and low water levels reduced vessel handling to around 13,000 tonnes. SBO states that the stability of rail and combined transport was central to its 2025 result, despite a slight decline in overall revenue.
