The innovative patrol vessel RPA ZERO, which is fully electric and virtually emission-free, has been tested on the Nieuwe Maas river in Rotterdam. The Artemis EF-12 Workboat from Artemis Technologies is equipped with hydrofoils, which allow the hull to rise above the water during acceleration, reducing drag, reducing waves and increasing energy efficiency. The tests will last until November 2025.
The pilot project will be part of a large-scale fleet renewal program, within the framework of which the Port of Rotterdam Authority will replace all operating vessels over 12 years. The goal is to improve environmental friendliness, simplify maintenance and ensure that the vessels are ready for work around the clock. The project team, including crews and technical specialists, will evaluate the vessel’s stability, ease of charging, reliability and its use in real conditions.
Artemis Technologies CEO Ian Percy noted that cooperation with one of Europe’s leading ports allows demonstrating the potential of hydrofoil vessels for decarbonizing port activities. In turn, the port representatives emphasize that in their quest to become the smartest and most sustainable port in Europe, they are relying on the latest technologies without sacrificing safety and efficiency.
