Transit through Central Asia has increased by 75% in four years.

From 2020 to 2024, transit traffic through Central Asian countries increased by 75%, reaching 35 million tons, according to the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB). In 2020, this figure was just over 20 million tons.

According to EDB analysts, the majority of freight traffic—approximately 80%—passes through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, with rail transport accounting for approximately 60% of all transit. More than 70% of the traffic volume is accounted for by routes connecting China, Russia, Turkey, Afghanistan, and European countries.

As part of the region’s long-term transport development strategy, the EDB’s Transport Projects Observatory forecasts investments of over $52 billion by 2035. These funds will be used to modernize infrastructure and expand international corridors to strengthen Central Asia’s role in global logistics.
