Zurich Airport is expanding its infrastructure: new runways have been approved and a modern cargo terminal is being built

Zurich Airport is expanding its runways and building a new cargo terminal. In January and February, 65,988 tons of cargo were handled, up 9.8% year-on-year and approaching pre-pandemic levels (71,508 tons in 2019).

On March 3, voters in the canton of Zurich approved the expansion of runways 28 and 32, despite the refusal of the residents of Winterthur. Construction of the runways will begin no earlier than 2030 and will cost 250 million francs, fully financed by the airport operator.

Construction of the new cargo terminal “Rächtenwisen” will begin in April and will be completed by 2027. The new 9,500 m² center will include 20 truck ramps, import and export processing areas, customs and inspection areas, and dedicated pharmaceutical and dangerous goods areas. Once completed, the terminal will be leased and used by Dnata Switzerland.
