At the new Riga Central Station, one of the key stages of construction has been completed. Meanwhile, at the Port of Emmerich – operated by Contargo Rhein-Waal-Lippe – a multi-year project to modernize the container terminal has reached its conclusion. On May 11, 2026, the company officially commissioned a new container gantry crane, installed as part of an infrastructure renewal program. The project was funded by Port Emmerich – Infrastruktur- und Immobiliengesellschaft mbH, the entity that owns the port’s infrastructure.

Over the past few years, the terminal’s footprint has been expanded by 12,000 square meters, and its infrastructure has undergone a comprehensive modernization. Specifically, the crane runways were upgraded, and a new container crane was installed to replace obsolete equipment. As a result, the terminal will be able to enhance cargo handling efficiency and reduce operating costs. As a trimodal logistics hub, the terminal facilitates cargo transshipment utilizing water, rail, and road transport, playing a vital role in both regional and international freight movements.

Total investment in the new crane and associated infrastructure amounted to approximately 12 million euros, while overall expenditures for the modernization of the port’s infrastructure reached roughly 20 million euros. The project received support through a German government program aimed at developing terminal infrastructure for combined transport. Furthermore, the terminal’s development continues: authorities have already received a positive indication regarding a funding application to replace a second container crane, which is nearing the end of its service life. The replacement of this crane is scheduled for 2028, with the aim of further increasing the facility’s throughput capacity.
