A push for Central Pyrenees rail link as third cross-border between Spain and France.

The European Alliance corREDores.eu presented its case on 24 March 2026 at the European Parliament for including the Central Pyrenees Crossing rail project in the EU’s next long-term transport funding framework.

The proposal centres on a third cross-border rail link between Spain and France through the central Pyrenees via a low-level tunnel. Rail traffic between the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of Europe currently depends on the Atlantic and Mediterranean routes, with no alternative corridor in case of disruption.

The project would complete the Algeciras or Sines – Madrid – Zaragoza – Toulouse axis, creating a direct connection to central and northern Europe. According to the alliance, this would increase freight capacity, support modal shift from road to rail and strengthen network resilience.

The group is not requesting immediate construction. Instead, it calls for the project to be listed as eligible for EU co-financed studies, including technical analysis, route planning and feasibility assessment, without committing construction funding at this stage.

Ahead of the parliamentary hearing, representatives of corREDores.eu held meetings in Brussels with several Members of the European Parliament to present the project’s cross-border and strategic rationale.
