CargoBeamer has launched an intermodal service between Stuttgart and Milan via the Alps.

This week, CargoBeamer launched a new train service between Stuttgart and Milan for transporting semi-trailers. The first train departed on Monday. The new service strengthens the company’s presence on the Germany-Italy route through the Swiss Alps, following the launch of the Liège-Domodossola line in January.

The service operates between the DUSS terminal in Kornwestheim near Stuttgart and the Malpensa Intermodal terminal in the northwest Milan metropolitan area. Four round trips per week are initially planned, with a potential increase to five. Traction for the trains is provided by CargoBeamer’s partner, SBB Cargo International. The company estimates that transporting one semi-trailer reduces CO₂ emissions by approximately 88% compared to diesel-powered road transport.

The new route is CargoBeamer’s second service, replacing the closed “rolling road” between Freiburg and Novara. It handles both crane-capable and non-crane-capable semi-trailers, including refrigerated trucks, curtain-sided and box trailers, as well as containers and swap bodies. The company notes growing demand for intermodal transport between southwest Germany and the greater Milan region and hopes to expand its network in Northern Italy with the new partner terminal.
